And yet at their core I suppose both fantasy and magical realism can often be used for the same purpose (as you said, giving voices and power to under represented groups). Harry Potter for example, is a kid with mean guardians and orphans are always turning out to have special powers in fantasy novels. I wonder (my limited experience of magical realism) off hand, if the difference is that in fantasy the powerless people gain access to the use of magic and in magical realism the magic happens to them, even though it benefits them. And coming back to the idea that to me fantasy seems to contain the most logical manifestation of magic, which of those scenarios is more realistic...Interesting.

Can't wait for our possible Season 4 watch along!
