Guys Lit Wire Goes Back to Ballou
Earlier this year Guys Lit Wire ran a book fair to get the Ballou High School Library some actual books. Before the fair ran Ballou had less than one book per student. You might remember seeing this video showing the state of the shelves at the time:
It was in a sad state because of the school's lack of funds, but was also fortunate to have a remarkable librarian champion in Melissa Jackson. She worked with Guys Lit Wire to create a Powells wish list of books that the kids at her school really wanted and needed, so that by the end of the fair Ballou’s library had grown dramatically. There was a huge response to Ballou’s story and the library now has 4 books per student.
While this is fantastic that figure is still well below the American Library Association’s recommended minimum average of 11 books per student. Guys Lit Wire are now holding a second book fair, encouraging people to pick up a book for the students at Ballou as they start their holiday shopping. If you think this is a great cause and can afford to help out, check out all the details at the Guys Lit Wire blog and then consider sending something one of the various books on their wish list.
This is one library we can help to grow during a tough time for many.
