LGBT Reading: 'The Night Watch' and The Green Carnation Prize
Two things:
1.) Watching the ‘Downton Abbey’ finale made me crave good twentieth century historical fiction where gay and lesbian characters are actually the main people. So, I’m planning to re-read Sarah Waters ‘The Night Watch’. When I mentioned it on Twitter a couple of people were like ‘Ooo Night Watch’ and I thought I would officially say ‘Re-readers and readers trying it out for the first time, come join me and read an awesome Sarah Waters book in late Nov.’. Maybe we could start reading on 24th Nov and then, as I’m not reviewing right now, maybe I could tempt people into a chat session in Dec? Would the 15th or 16th of Dec give people enough time?
2.) I always really want to read the shortlist for the Green Carnation Prize (first UK award specifically for LGBT authors, created by blogger Simon Savidge) before the winner is announced. It’s an excellent project and it seems like an appropriate way to support an award created by a blogger would be to devote time to critically engaging with the books on the list. I inevitably fail at reading the shortlist despite my good intentions, because reading six pre-chosen books in roughly a month quickly feels too much like book blogger homework to me.
However, if five other people were interested in reading the shortlist, but also similarly meh about cramming six books into four weeks we could form a project team. We could each pick just one of the books and then post about that book in the week before the winner is revealed on 12th Dec. Am I tempting anyone? What if I say that as I’m not writing reviews, maybe I would vlog about the book instead…
If you’re interested in either of these things drop me a comment with some way of contacting you so we can work out some firm details.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-09 07:00 pm (UTC)(link)Unfortunately my library doesn't own any of the shortlisted books. Will try to work something else out.. Hmmm. I hope you get enough people joining in because that would be interesting!
