bookgazing: (i heart books)
I’m feeling mostly better, although have returned to work to find that a lot of people in our office have gone down with the same bug. The cold germs are really defeated, but they do like to cling on making a nuisance of themselves.

In media news from mostly before I got ill I had recently finished:

‘Railsea’ - excellent – talking about it with maree
‘The Song of Achilles’ - although I loved certain aspects my feelings are mixed when I think about this one critically and I need to pick up my act to talk about it with Vasilly
‘The Lost Books of the Odyssey’ - so interesting, has anyone else read it?
‘The Drowned Cities’ - hrm, not bad, but SO sad that it seems Bacigalupi’s work is no longer guaranteed great for me

Watched:

‘The Artist’ - so much fun, which is weird to say considering how depressing the story is for one of the characters
‘The Lady’ - the focus of the film gives me pause in light of dominant media trends)
‘Point Break’ - this was my pick for Amy’s film club, haha so 80s it hurts but I adored it. bookshop is totally responsible for me watching this film.
‘The Lost Boys’ for like the billionth time.

I also:

Made plans to watch ‘Magic Mike’ with friends, ice cream and smuggled in booze.

Reached the point in ‘Revenge’ where there will never be as many same sex make outs/threesome groupings in the real show as there are in my imagination, so I have to reconcile myself with Emily’s excellent hard-girl revenge face.

Caught up on the entire third series of ‘Made in Chelsea’. : ( . I know they’re rich kids with rich kid problems ok and they love the dramz too much, but sometimes I feel sorry for them.

Tried to watch Spencer from ‘MiC’ in ‘The Bachelor’. Ran away screaming.

Got caught up in the search for a leading man in ‘Superstar’. Thank goodness Nathan is finally gone. He fakes all his emotions except when he shows anger at constructive criticism. Dawn French is still cool. I love that Jason Donovan is styling himself as the firm but fair judge. I will not be trying to see this stage show, despite Tim Minchin being involved, because ugh Chris Moyles.

Started thinking about reading classics as 90% of everything I’ve consumed recently has been a reworking of an original source (‘Revenge’, ‘The Song of Achilles’, ‘The Lost Books of the Odyssey’, ‘Railsea’).

Thought about rereading ‘The Penelopiad’ again to see if I enjoyed it better the second time round. Penelope seems to get some rough judgement and I would love to find a book that made me feel like a writer cared about her.

Got gifted a gorgeous copy of ‘Moby Dick’ that I had been coveting, which fits right in with my classics reading plan and a hardback copy of ‘The Long Earth’.

Bought ‘Snuff’ and ‘A Dance with Dragons’ as an ineffectual and pretty rubbish protest against so many people in the train station buying 50 Shades of Doomed Publishing Industry.

Started watching ‘Grimm’, while peering out from under the blankets.

Got a copy of ‘The Legend of Korra’ from Peta! OMG when I got the e-mail about this it was unbelievably awesome!

Spent a lot of time pining over how I don’t have access to ‘Teen Wolf’ S2 and reading Teen Wolf fic.

And then I did a lot of other things before I got ill. The highlights:

A four hour trip to Norfolk to see the GB speedway team almost make it into the final (so close, so close).

Weekend break that I couldn’t really afford with a lot of my close friends, their partners and one over worked hot tub.

Trip to see my friend and her new flat, which involved a lot of antique shop browsing.

Going to see ‘The Tempest’ and ‘Twelfth Night’ (the second with some blogging buddies).

Trying on my bridesmaid dress.

This week may as well be subtitled HOLY SHIT THE OLYMPICS! So don’t expect to see much except Olympic pics going up here and hopefully a post about interning. The Olympics are in town. No srsly they’re in town, I will be seeing some the football an hour away from here #notjustlondon and I am taking quuuuiiite a bit of time off to go to events and watch them on TV. HOLY SHIT THE OLYMPICS ARE HERE EVERYONE! Everyone look out for the gigantic Voldemort in the opening ceremony on Friday. I would love Danny Boyle if all the news about his ceremony turned out to be an elaborate hoax…
